Fit & Ease - what is ease?
Ease is the measurement of a garment that is greater than your physical chest size. When designing, ease is worked into each design; generally the greater the ease, the more casual the fit of the garment.
The fit of a garment is a combination of body ease and really importantly, the fit over the shoulder. The majority of Jane's designs have a fitted shoulder; unlike the chest size, the shoulder fit has very little difference between sizes, the chest may increase by 2"/5cm between sizes, but the shoulder will increase by less than ½"/1cm.
|
Fit is a personal preference, and also different per design. Left the garment is worn fitted, this is just 1½"/4cm larger than the model's chest size.
Most garments are designs with 'ease'. This can be from 2"/5cm to 6"/15cm greater than your chest size.
Example Chest of 38"/96cm
Windsor Jacket (right) with 2"/5cm ease = 40"/101cm, this is designed to be fitted.
Blocks Cardigan is a casual style with 6"/15cm = 44"/111cm.
Stock garments are identified each with a stock number & design name: Blocks HE22 colour and size 12 - 16, as well as measurements of that garment for chest, hip and length. Compare these to a knit in your wardrobe to gauge your size and ease. Happy to chat about size and colours. |

Designing handknits with Mitres.
Check out my YouTube video on knitting Mitres to understand construction of garment; quite different from standard garment construction. Most frequently asked question is if they are squares sewn together, which is not the case.
Garments are constructed from either panels of Mitres like the Coco Shawl Panel Cardigan, or totally from Mitre as the Coco Slub A line Coat, whilst the Mitre Tally Ho Jacket and Mitre Vee Capelet are created by first knitting one section in Mitres and then adding the remainder of the garment to this panel. Fun to knit. |

Coco Shawl Panel Cardigan.
Mitres form the front and back panels of pattern, mitre trim on cuffs. Shawl collar worn edge to edge. |
Coco Shawl Panel
Cardigan Worn as an edge to edge style, so no buttons. The Mitres create the Vees along the hemline front, back and cuff.
The lower sleeve has a garter stitch stripe; this texture is worked into the side seam and body of the sleeves. The A line adds 14cm into the hip.
HE09 Coco Shawl left & right is the shortest length to points on hem 60cm, longer length 70-75cm. |

Fit is a personal preference, a neat fit would have a chest ease of 4cm = your chest + 4cm; standard fit is about 6-8cm; loose + 12 to 15cm. The actual measurements per garment for chest, hip and body length are given. If you have a handknit in your wardrobe, check by measuring across the chest below the armhole.

Mitre Vee Capelet
This Capelet style is a large Vee shape, worn with the multi-coloured patterned panel to centre back, this piece sits over the shoulders without requiring buttons.
Worn with the patterned panel on the shoulder (left) wrapped creates the Poncho look or (above) model in grey belted. To wear wrapped or belted, take the patterned panel onto the shoulder making the fronts uneven, the longer side becomes the wrapped piece.
This is a one size garment, the different lengths per garment reflect the tension difference between 3 different knitters. |
